One of the biggest mistakes people make in training is assuming that every good exercise is automatically the right exercise for them.
It is not.
An exercise can be effective, challenging, and popular, but still be the wrong choice for a specific person at a specific time. That is why exercise selection matters so much. The movements you choose should not simply make you tired. They should move you closer to your goal.
At CrossFit Milford, we believe training should have purpose behind it.
If someone wants to get stronger, move better, improve conditioning, reduce pain, or return to something they have not been able to do, the exercises in their program need to reflect that goal. They also need to reflect the person performing them.
Two people can walk into the gym with the same goal and need completely different approaches.
One person may need to build basic strength and control. Another may already be strong but struggle with mobility, stability, or fatigue management. One athlete may benefit from a barbell movement, while another may make faster progress using dumbbells, machines, tempo work, or a different variation entirely.
The goal is not to force everyone into the same exercise.
The goal is to find the exercise that creates the right adaptation.
Proper exercise selection takes into account training history, current ability, injury history, movement quality, schedule, recovery, and individual limitations. It also considers what the person can perform consistently and progress over time.
This is important because progress is rarely about finding the hardest movement possible.
It is about finding the right entry point and building from there.
A well-selected exercise allows someone to train with better positions, use the correct muscles, manage fatigue, and gradually add load, volume, speed, or complexity. A poorly selected exercise can lead to compensation, frustration, stalled progress, or unnecessary discomfort.
This does not mean training should always feel easy.
It means the difficulty should serve a purpose.
The right exercise should challenge you enough to create change without constantly breaking you down. As you improve, the exercise can be progressed or replaced based on what you need next.
That is where thoughtful coaching becomes so valuable.
Good coaching is not just counting repetitions or pushing someone through a workout. It is understanding why a movement is being used, what it is supposed to improve, and whether it is actually working.
This is also one of the biggest benefits of personal training at CrossFit Milford.
Personal training gives us the ability to build the session around you. We can select exercises based on your goals, your current starting point, and the specific areas that will make the biggest difference. We can adjust quickly, manage your workload, and progress the plan as your body adapts.
You do not need more random exercises.
You need the right exercises, performed consistently, with a clear plan behind them.
That is how real progress is built.
